Perfume Notes Explained: Top, Middle & Base Notes Guide

Top notes: the first impression

Top notes are what you smell in the first 5-15 minutes after applying a fragrance. They're typically light, volatile molecules — citrus, light florals, and fresh herbs — designed to create an immediate, appealing first impression before fading.

Middle (heart) notes: the true character

Once the top notes fade, middle notes emerge and typically last 20 minutes to a few hours. This is considered the "heart" of the fragrance — often florals, spices, or fruit — and represents the scent's true personality.

Base notes: the lasting impression

Base notes are the heaviest, slowest-evaporating molecules — think musk, amber, vanilla, oud, and woods. They emerge as the middle notes fade and can last many hours, forming the scent that lingers on clothing and skin long after application.

A fragrance that smells amazing on a test strip in-store is really only showing you the top notes. The scent you'll actually live with for most of the day is the base — so before buying, wait at least 30 minutes after application to judge a fragrance properly.
