How to Care for Your Watch: Maintenance Tips That Make It Last
A little regular care goes a long way toward keeping your watch accurate and looking new for years.
A good watch is built to last decades, but only if it's looked after properly. Sri Lanka's heat, humidity and dust bring their own challenges — here's how to keep your watch running well for years.
Wipe it down after wear
Sweat and skin oils can corrode metal bracelets and degrade leather straps over time. A quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth at the end of the day prevents build-up.
Mind the moisture
Unless your watch is explicitly rated for it, avoid wearing it in the shower or pool — humidity and temperature changes can fog up the crystal or, worse, let moisture into the movement. Check the water resistance rating on the caseback before assuming it's safe.
Store it properly
When not in use, store your watch in a cool, dry place — ideally its original box or a watch case. Avoid leaving it on a windowsill or dashboard where direct sunlight and heat can dry out leather straps and fade dials.
Service automatic movements regularly
Mechanical watches need servicing every 3-5 years to replace worn lubricants and keep the movement accurate. Skipping this can lead to more expensive repairs down the line.
Clean the strap or bracelet
- Leather straps: avoid water entirely; condition occasionally to prevent cracking.
- Metal bracelets: a soft brush and mild soapy water removes dust from between links.
- Rubber/silicone straps: rinse with fresh water after sweaty or salty wear.
Avoid magnets
Mechanical movements are sensitive to strong magnetic fields, which can cause a watch to run wildly inaccurate. Keep watches away from phone cases with magnetic closures, speakers, and laptop lids.
